According to Article 51A, every citizen of India has the following duties:
(a) To adhere to the Constitution and respect its principles, as well as the National Flag and the National Anthem.
(b) To honor and follow the noble ideals that inspired the national freedom struggle
.(c) To safeguard and protect India's sovereignty, unity, and integrity.
(d) To defend the nation and perform national service when required.
(e) To promote unity and the spirit of brotherhood among all people of India, transcending religious, linguistic, regional, or sectional differences, and to reject practices that degrade the dignity of women.
(f) To value and preserve the nation's rich and diverse cultural heritage.
(g) To protect and enhance the environment, including forests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife, and show compassion for living creatures.
(h) To cultivate a scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform.
(i) To protect public property and renounce violence.
(j) To strive for excellence in all areas of individual and collective activity so that the nation continues to rise to higher levels of achievement.
(k) To ensure education for one's child or ward between the ages of six and fourteen years. This duty was added by the 86th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2002.
